PAX South: Things I wish I had known before exhibiting at a major trade show

After our successful experience in Miami, it was time to look ahead and plan for 2017. We needed to find places to showcase the game, and this is how we went about it.

B eing an indie game developer, one of the most intimidating things for us to do was figure out which conventions to aim to go to as well as figuring out how to actually get accepted. This is something that we have actually just had to tackle so we thought we might offer some insight as to what we learned. We will provide links to many of the helpful websites that we found during our search.

The very thing we wanted to do was compile a big list of every convention that we found. We figured that rather than simply finding ones we wanted to go to, if we found many more than we could hope to go to, it would allow us to try to fit the puzzle pieces together later with a wide range of conventions to pick from.

"Should we go to many small conventions? Only a few of the bigger? Or maybe a mix of both?”

Once we found many conventions to visit this next year we made a big excel spreadsheet of the details ranging from how many miles total we would have to drive and local hotels around the area and how close to the convention center they were.

With this comprehensive spreadsheet we were then able to set a budget for ourselves and play around with which conventions would fit. Should we go to many small conventions? Only a few of the bigger? Or maybe a mix of both? These were all questions that we had in our heads as we tried to piece the puzzle together.

Once we found out which conventions looked interesting to us and would fit in with our schedule and budget, we needed to make contact with someone at the convention. Doing this allowed us to get more of a complete idea of what to expect, such as: what is the room layout? What exactly is the difference between the different booth options and where they are located? Do they recommend we advertise or will foot traffic be sufficient? How many passes do we get and how much would extras be? Making this contact on the inside achieved us multiple goals, we learned a lot about what to expect and we were actually on their radar. Every person we talked to were extremely helpful and provided us with all the information we needed and far more.

"Making this contact on the inside achieved us multiple goals, we learned a lot about what to expect and we were actually on their radar."

After we managed to find out all of this extra information by contacting the convention and forming a relationship, we were able to tweak our numbers for any extra expenses that we did not anticipate and get to actually booking them.

And this is where we are right now, we have a comprehensive plan of where we hope to go and are starting to send in applications. Here we will provide you with many of the links we found to be extremely helpful and we hope they may be helpful to you! We look forward to seeing you at many conventions this next year!
